Fees and privacy

Why the practice is private pay

Dr. O’Brien’s practice is private pay, which means families pay directly for care rather than billing insurance. This is a deliberate choice—one that keeps treatment decisions in the hands of the clinician and family, where they belong.

Insurance typically requires a diagnosis

To cover sessions, insurance companies generally require a formal mental health diagnosis—which then becomes part of your child’s permanent record, even when the concern is situational, mild, or something most children experience at some point.

Insurance can dictate the course of care

Insurers often limit the number of approved sessions and may end coverage before treatment is finished. Care plans get shaped by coverage rules rather than by what your child actually needs.

Billing means less privacy

Every insurance claim shares information about your child and family with the insurer, where it may be reviewed by multiple third parties and can follow your child’s records into the future. Private pay keeps your family’s information between you and Dr. O’Brien.

What private pay makes possible

Without insurer constraints, sessions can move at your child’s pace, focus on your family’s goals, and adapt as needs change. A superbill is available upon request for families seeking possible out-of-network reimbursement; insurance reimbursement is not guaranteed. Dr. O’Brien accepts Visa, MasterCard or HSA funds, and can assist with financing through CareCredit.
